Tires: knobby vs street

Knobby tires have deep, spaced tread blocks that bite into dirt, gravel and grass. On pavement they are a little noisier and wear faster, but at typical electric scooter speeds the trade-off is small. Street tires roll faster and quieter on tarmac but skate on loose ground. Air-filled tires are standard off-road because they absorb bumps; solid tires are rare on this page for that reason. Several models take both tire types, so you can swap for your usual terrain.

Front and rear suspension

Suspension is what separates a comfortable off-road electric scooter from a punishing one. Spring or hydraulic forks and swingarms at both ends keep the tires in contact with the ground over ruts and roots and take the sting out of landings. Hydraulic units are more controlled than plain springs; adjustable units let you set them for your weight. The suspension row on each product page says what is fitted.

Hills, dual motors and battery voltage

Loose climbs need torque at both wheels. Dual motor electric scooters on 60V or 72V batteries climb steep dirt tracks that stall a single motor model, and most let you switch to one motor on the flat to save range. Makers quote a maximum hill grade in the spec rows; treat it as measured with a light rider.

Water resistance

Off-road riding means mud and puddles. Makers publish an IP rating (for example IPX4 or IPX5) that describes splash and spray resistance; we show it exactly as the maker states it. No electric scooter is built for submersion, and riding in heavy rain or through deep water can void a warranty. See the warranty page.

Where you can ride off-road

Trail access rules differ by state, park and land owner, and many trails that allow bicycles do not allow motorised vehicles. Check local rules and ride where electric scooters are permitted.

Questions

Asked and answered

Can an electric scooter go off-road?

Yes, if it is built for it. Knobby tires, front and rear suspension and enough motor power make the difference; every model on this page meets that test.

What tires are best for an off-road electric scooter?

Air-filled knobby tires. They grip loose surfaces and absorb bumps that solid or street tires transmit straight to the rider.

How steep a hill can a dual motor electric scooter climb?

Makers typically rate dual motor models for grades in the 25–45% range, measured with a light rider on a good surface. The maximum grade is in the spec rows on each product page.

Can I ride an off-road electric scooter in the rain?

Light rain is generally fine on models with an IPX4 or higher rating, but no electric scooter is waterproof. Avoid deep water, dry the electric scooter afterwards and check the maker’s warranty terms on water damage.
