How much does an electric bike cost? 2026 price guide

Electric bikes start under $500 and climb past $5,000. Here is where each style sits, what the extra money buys and how classes and local rules fit in.

The short answer

How much does an electric bike cost? Simple folding, commuter and mountain models sell for under $500. From $500 to $1,000 you get bigger batteries, fat tires, step-through frames and, on some models, full suspension. From $1,000 to $2,000 come torque sensors, hydraulic brakes and smart features such as GPS tracking. Above $2,000 the money goes into much bigger batteries and more power, mostly in fat tire and moped-style designs. Electric dirt bikes start in the $500 to $1,000 band and run well past $5,000.

  • Under $500 buys a folding, commuter or mountain electric bike with a small battery.
  • From $1,000 to $2,000, torque sensors, hydraulic brakes and smart features become common.
  • Battery size in watt hours is the clearest reason one electric bike costs more than another.
  • More money can buy more power than the e-bike classes allow, which limits where you can ride.

The style you want decides which price band you shop in. Prices change with sales and options, so check the product page for the current figure; the models in this guide sat in each band when we wrote it.

Where electric dirt bikes sit

Electric dirt bikes are off-road machines, not e-bikes, but many shoppers compare the two.

What drives the price of an electric bike

Battery size is the clearest reason one electric bike costs more than another. Multiply volts by amp hours for watt hours (Wh): the Hiboy C1 carries about 281Wh, the Hiboy EX6 about 696Wh and the Speedway Riders Q3 960Wh.

  • Motor type. Most electric bikes use a hub motor in the wheel, which is simple and keeps costs down. A mid-drive motor drives the chain, climbs better and costs more. Our hub vs mid-drive guide explains the trade off.
  • Pedal sensor. A cadence sensor switches the motor on when the pedals turn. A torque sensor measures how hard you push, feels more natural and usually costs more.
  • Brakes, suspension and extras. Mechanical discs and a front fork on many budget models, then hydraulic discs, full suspension, GPS tracking and electronic shifting as the price rises.

Classes, NYC rules and what more power means

Most US states sort electric bikes into three classes. Class 1 assists while you pedal up to 20 mph, class 2 adds a throttle up to 20 mph, and class 3 assists while you pedal up to 28 mph. Many states also expect a motor of 750 watts or less. Our guide to e-bike classes covers the details.

In New York City, class 3 e-bikes may assist up to 25 mph, the city has a 15 mph speed limit for e-bikes on its streets and park paths, and only e-bikes with UL 2849 certification may be sold there. Read NYC e-bike laws for 2026 before you ride in the city.

More money can buy a ride the classes do not cover. Moped-style models with large motors, and electric dirt bikes, can fall outside the e-bike rules, which can keep them off bike lanes, paths or public roads. Rules vary by state and city, so check yours before you choose. This is general information, not legal advice.

Questions riders ask

What is a good electric bike under $1,000?

For tight storage, a folding model such as the Gyroor C33 or Hiboy C1. For dirt paths, the Gyroor EB262 or EB263. For comfort on rough streets, the Hiboy EX6 fat tire step-through. Browse all electric bikes under $1,000.

Are cheap electric bikes safe?

Look for disc brakes front and rear and a listed safety standard such as UL 2849, which the Gyroor C33, Phantom P14 and Hiboy EX6 all list, and charge only with the supplied charger. Many budget models arrive partly assembled, so check the brakes, bolts and tire pressure before your first ride.

Why do some electric bikes cost more than $5,000?

You pay for very large batteries and motorcycle-class parts. The WEPED F1, for example, is built to order in Korea with a 2,016 Wh battery of Samsung SDI cells, motorcycle-class hydraulic brakes and a POSCO 6061 aluminum frame.

Can I pay for an electric bike over time?

Yes. Orders up to $2,000 can use Pay in 4 at 0% APR. Monthly plans with Affirm are subject to approval. See financing for details.
