Segway Max G3 vs Max G3 Plus vs Max G2: which Ninebot Max to buy

Three Segway Max commuters, one family. The G2 is the 36V original, the G3 moves to 48V with disc brakes and 11-inch tires, and the G3 Plus adds battery and a built-in fast charger.

The short answer

The Segway Max G3 is a big step up from the Max G2. It moves from a 36V to a 48V system, doubles peak power from 1000W to 2000W, raises the top speed from 22 to 28 mph, swaps the front drum brake for front and rear discs, and moves to 11-inch tires with hydraulic suspension at both ends, for 50 miles of range against 43. The Max G3 Plus keeps the G3 chassis and adds a bigger 717Wh battery for up to 56 miles, 2200W peak, double hydraulic suspension, piston disc brakes and a built-in 209W fast charger. All three fold, weigh 53.5 to 56 lb and include traction control and Apple Find My.

  • The Max G2 is the 36V model: 450W rated, 1000W peak, 22 mph, 43 miles, a front drum brake and 10-inch tires.
  • The Max G3 moves to 48V: 850W rated, 2000W peak, 28 mph, 50 miles, front and rear disc brakes and 11-inch tires.
  • The Max G3 Plus adds a 717Wh battery for 56 miles, 2200W peak, piston disc brakes and a built-in fast charger.
  • All three have traction control, Apple Find My, self-sealing tubeless tires and a folding stem.

The Segway Max family at a glance

The Segway Max line is built for commuting: long range, a sturdy frame and tires that shrug off small punctures. We carry three of them.

  • Segway Max G2: a 36V 15.3Ah (551Wh) battery, a 450W rear motor with 1000W peak, up to 22 mph with higher speed on and up to 43 miles.
  • Segway Max G3: a 46.8V 12.75Ah (597Wh) battery, an 850W motor with 2000W peak, about 28 mph with High Speed turned on in the app and up to 50 miles.
  • Segway Max G3 Plus: a 46.8V 15.3Ah (717Wh) battery, an 850W motor with 2200W peak, 28 mph and up to 56 miles in ECO mode.

The Max G2 sits in the $500 to $1,000 price band, and the Max G3 and G3 Plus both sit in the $1,000 to $1,500 band. See every model on our Segway electric scooters and bikes page, and for the whole Segway range, read Segway electric scooters compared.

Power, speed and hills

The G3 generation is a different class of scooter from the G2. The Max G2 runs 450W rated and 1000W peak on 36 volts. The Max G3 runs 850W rated and 2000W peak on a 48V class battery, and the G3 Plus lifts the peak to 2200W.

  • Top speed: up to 22 mph on the G2 with higher speed turned on, and 28 mph on the G3 and G3 Plus. On the G3, Segway says High Speed in the app lifts it to about 28 mph.
  • Climbing: Segway rates the G2 for slopes up to 22% and both G3 models for up to 30%.
  • Traction control: all three have TCS, which limits wheel spin on wet or loose surfaces.

If your commute has real hills, or you weigh close to the limit, the G3 or G3 Plus will hold speed far better than the G2. On flat routes, the G2 still covers a typical commute comfortably. Before you ride, check the speed limits for scooters in your state and city; our sibling guide to 25 mph electric scooters covers riding in that speed tier.

Battery, range and charging

Battery size runs 551Wh on the G2, 597Wh on the G3 and 717Wh on the G3 Plus. Segway rates them for 43, 50 and 56 miles. The G2 figure is listed as theoretical range and the G3 Plus figure is in ECO mode, so treat all three as best-case numbers. Expect noticeably less riding in the fastest mode, in the cold or with a heavier rider. Our guide to real electric scooter range explains why.

  • Max G2: built-in charger, about 5 hours.
  • Max G3: about 3.5 hours.
  • Max G3 Plus: a built-in 209W fast charger, about 4 hours for the larger battery.

A built-in charger means you carry only a power cord, not a separate brick, which is handy if you charge at work. Charge only with Segway’s supplied charging setup and follow the manual. See electric scooter battery care for habits that keep the pack healthy.

Suspension, tires and brakes

Ride comfort and braking improve the most from the G2 to the G3.

  • Suspension: the G2 has hydraulic front and dual spring rear suspension. The G3 has hydraulic suspension front and rear, and the G3 Plus has double hydraulic suspension front and rear.
  • Tires: the G2 rides on 10-inch self-sealing tubeless tires. Both G3 models move to 11-inch tubeless, self-sealing tires, which roll over cracks and potholes more easily.
  • Brakes: the G2 uses a front drum brake with a rear electronic brake. The G3 has front and rear disc brakes, and the G3 Plus has front and rear piston disc brakes plus an electronic brake.

A drum brake is sealed and needs little care, but discs give stronger, more direct stopping at the higher speeds the G3 can reach. Our sibling guide to drum vs disc brakes explains the difference, and electric scooter brakes explained covers the rest. Never convert or modify brakes yourself. If they feel weak, power off, follow Segway’s manual, and have a qualified technician check them. Self-sealing tires handle small punctures, and tubeless vs tubed tires explains how.

Weight, load and weather

The weight barely changes across the family. The G2 weighs 53.5 lb, the G3 54.2 lb and the G3 Plus 56 lb, so the G3 generation adds performance without adding much to carry. All three fold.

  • Max load: 265 lb for the G2 and 286 lb for both G3 models.
  • Water resistance: IPX5 for the G2 and IPX6 for both G3 models. Neither rating makes a scooter safe in deep water, so avoid big puddles and never pressure wash.
  • Tracking: all three work with Apple Find My, which helps you locate a parked scooter. Lock it anyway; see protect your electric scooter from theft.

At around 54 to 56 lb, none of these is a carry-everywhere scooter. If you climb several flights of stairs every day, read lightest electric scooters before deciding.
