Thirty mph is the fast commuter tier: quick enough for 25 mph streets, light enough to carry. Most local limits are lower, so the low speed modes matter as much as the top one.
The short answer
A 30 mph electric scooter is the fast commuter tier: strong enough to hold speed on hills and keep pace on 25 mph streets, and most models weigh 54 to 90 lb. In our catalog the 28 to 35 mph group runs on batteries from about 48V to 60V, with either one strong motor or two modest ones. Many local limits are 15 to 20 mph, so look for a model with a speed limit mode or low gears, and use them. Then compare brakes, tires, weight and charging time.
This tier sits between 20 mph commuters and 40 mph performance models. You get enough power to climb without crawling and to pull away cleanly in traffic, and most models still fold and fit a car trunk. What you give up is the light carry weight of a 30 lb commuter.

In many places the legal limit for an electric scooter is well below what these models can do. Many states and cities cap electric scooters at 15 to 20 mph. New York State defines an electric scooter as weighing under 100 lb with a top speed of 20 mph or less on the motor, and New York City has set a 15 mph limit for e-bikes and electric scooters on city streets. Our NYC e-bike and electric scooter rules guide covers the details.
So the low settings matter as much as the top speed. Several models in this tier have them built in:

This is general information, not legal advice. Rules change. Check your state motor vehicle agency and your city website before you ride, and ride at the local limit whatever the scooter can do.
A single motor keeps the scooter lighter and simpler, and in this tier one motor is plenty for most routes.

Two motors share the work and put power through both tires, which helps on steep streets, loose ground and wet roads. Many let you ride on one motor to save battery.

From 30 mph you need about four times the distance to stop that you need from 15 mph. Brakes vary a lot in this tier, so check them before anything else.
Tires matter just as much. Self-sealing tubeless tires on the Segway GT3, Max G3 and TK5 can seal small punctures. The TITAN PRO uses 10 in gel-filled tubeless tires, and the Tiger 8 Pro an air front tire with a solid rear. Read electric scooter brakes explained for how each brake type works.
Range drops at speed. NAVEE measures its range figures at 9.3 mph, and E-TWOW lists consumption of 19.3 Wh per mile for the TK5. Ridden near 30 mph, expect well under the table figure. Our guide to electric scooter real range shows how to estimate yours.
Above 25 mph, a bicycle helmet is not enough. Wear a helmet made for the speed, ideally full face, plus gloves and sturdy shoes, and add knee and elbow protection for longer rides. See our electric scooter safety gear guide.

In many places, not at full speed. Many states and cities cap electric scooters at 15 to 20 mph, and New York State defines an electric scooter as having a top speed of 20 mph or less on the motor. Check your state and city rules.
It is quick for a commuter. Most commuter models top out near 15 to 20 mph, while performance models go 40 mph and up.
No. Single motor models such as the Segway GT3 and NANROBOT G4 reach this tier on one motor. Two motors help most on steep hills and slippery roads.
Many models let you. The NANROBOT G4, G1 and G3 list a 15.5 mph speed limit mode, and models such as the KUKIRIN G2 Max and ASAP 10 V2 have low gears. Follow the maker’s manual to set them.

Three wheels mean no balancing at a stop, a seat and room for shopping. They also mean a wider, heavier machine that corners differently. Here is how to decide.
