How fast do electric scooters go? Speed classes from 15 to 60 mph and beyond

Commuter models top out near 15 to 20 mph. The fastest ones pass highway speeds. Here is what each step up actually feels like and what it demands.

The short answer

Most commuter electric scooters reach 15 to 20 mph. Mid range models reach 25 to 35 mph, performance models 40 to 55 mph, and a small group of flagship models go past 60 mph. Top speed depends on motor power, battery voltage, rider weight and terrain, and many places set a legal limit well below what the faster models can do.

  • Around 15 to 20 mph is about as fast as a bicycle in town, and it suits most commutes.
  • Battery voltage and motor power together set the top speed. Rider weight and hills pull it down.
  • Above 25 mph you need proper protective gear, strong brakes and larger tires.
  • Local law often caps speed on public roads. The legal limit applies whatever the model can do.

The four speed classes

  • 15 to 20 mph, commuter. Light, foldable and easy to carry. Fast enough to keep up with city bike traffic. This is where most first time buyers should start.
  • 25 to 35 mph, mid range. Stronger single motors, bigger batteries, suspension and disc brakes. Good for longer commutes and riders who want to keep pace on 25 mph streets.
  • 40 to 55 mph, performance. Dual motors, hydraulic brakes and wide tires. Heavy, powerful and meant for experienced riders.
  • 60 mph and above, flagship. The top of the market. These are closer to a small motorcycle in speed and need to be treated like one.

What decides top speed

Voltage sets how fast the motor can spin, and watts set how hard it can push. A 36V commuter system and a 72V performance system are built for very different speeds. More power also holds speed on a hill or into a headwind.

  • Rider weight. Makers test with a light rider. A heavier rider will see a lower top speed, mostly on inclines.
  • Battery level. Voltage falls as the battery drains, and top speed falls with it. Expect the last third of the charge to feel slower.
  • Terrain and wind. A slight uphill or a headwind can take several mph off.
  • Tire size and pressure. Larger wheels roll more easily at speed. Soft tires slow you down.
  • Riding mode. Most models ship in a limited mode. The full speed mode is selected on the display.

Advertised speed and real speed

Like range, top speed is a maker figure from favorable conditions. You may see a few mph less in normal use, and that is normal. A GPS app on your phone is a more reliable measure than the display on the handlebar, which often reads a little high.

Speed and the law

Know your local limit before you choose a speed class. Many states and cities cap electric scooters at somewhere between 15 and 20 mph on public roads and bike lanes, and rules on sidewalks, helmets and minimum age vary widely. Faster models are often restricted to private land in the places with the strictest rules.

The gear each speed needs

  • Up to 20 mph: a bicycle helmet at minimum, lights front and rear, and gloves.
  • 20 to 35 mph: a helmet rated for higher speed, such as a downhill or full face type, plus gloves and knee and elbow protection.
  • Above 35 mph: motorcycle grade gear. A full face motorcycle helmet, armored jacket, gloves and sturdy boots.

Stopping matters more than going. Braking distance grows much faster than speed. At 30 mph you need roughly four times the distance to stop that you need at 15 mph. Practice hard stops somewhere empty before you need one in traffic.

How much speed do you actually need?

Match the speed to the roads you ride, then stop. If your route is bike lanes and 25 mph streets, a model that does 20 to 28 mph covers it. Extra speed costs money, adds weight and uses battery faster: riding flat out can cut your range sharply, as our range guide explains.

What is a good speed for commuting?

For most city commutes, 15 to 25 mph is plenty. It keeps pace with bicycle traffic and stays within the legal limit in many places.

Can I make my electric scooter faster?

Most models have a full speed mode in the display settings. Beyond that, modifying the controller or battery is unsafe, usually ends the warranty and may make the vehicle illegal on public roads.

Why is my electric scooter slower than advertised?

Check the riding mode first, then tire pressure and battery level. Rider weight, hills, wind and cold all reduce top speed too.

Are fast electric scooters safe?

They can be ridden safely by experienced riders with proper protective gear, good brakes and respect for the conditions. They are not a sensible first purchase.
