Seven scooters share the S2 name, and they differ more than the badge suggests. Here is how the battery, tires, suspension and weight change from model to model.
The short answer
In the Hiboy S2 vs S2 Pro choice, both reach 19 mph on honeycomb tires that never go flat, with rear suspension. The S2 Pro adds a bigger 36V 11.6Ah battery, a 500 W motor and 10-inch tires against the S2’s 36V 7.5Ah battery, 350 W motor and 8.5-inch tires, for up to 25 miles instead of 17. The S2 Max moves to a 48V battery for up to 40 miles on 10-inch self-healing tires, but has no suspension and weighs 40 lb. The S2 SE, S2 Nova, S2R Plus and S2 Lite fill the gaps.
The S2 family is Hiboy’s line of light, folding commuter scooters. The adult models share a 19 mph top speed, a single motor, an IPX4 water rating and a 220 lb maximum load. What changes is the battery, the tires, the suspension and the weight.
Comparing Hiboy with other commuter brands instead? Our guide to Segway vs NAVEE vs Hiboy covers that. This guide stays inside the S2 family.
This is the choice most shoppers start with, and the two look almost the same. Both have honeycomb tires that never go flat, dual rear shocks and a 19 mph top speed. The differences sit inside.
Folded, they are close in size: 45.7 x 17.0 x 19.3 inches for the S2 and 45.3 x 16.5 x 19.3 inches for the S2 Pro. The S2 brakes with an electronic brake and a disc, and offers two riding modes. Hiboy lists regenerative braking on the S2 Pro, which puts a little charge back as you slow down. The S2 Pro also lists UL 2272 certification, explained in our guide to UL 2272.
For most riders, the S2 Pro is worth the extra 2 lb. The bigger battery and tires matter every day. The S2 makes sense if your trips are short and every pound counts.
The S2 Max is the one for long commutes. It is the only S2 with a 48V battery: 48V 11.6Ah, about 557Wh, for up to 40 miles. The motor is rated at 500 W with 650 W peak, and the top speed stays at 19 mph.
It also changes the ride. In place of honeycomb tires, it rolls on 10-inch self-healing air-filled tires, which grip better and ride softer. It has no suspension, so the tires do the cushioning. Regenerative braking and three riding modes, chosen from the LED dashboard, round it out.
The trade offs are weight and charging. It weighs 40 lb, folds to 45.7 x 18.9 x 20.7 inches and takes 6 to 7 hours to charge. Hiboy recommends it for riders aged 16 to 50.
Both pair a solid front tire that resists flats with an air-filled rear tire that smooths the ride. Each lists a 19 mph top speed and a 5.5 hour charge.
The S2 Nova is lighter and goes further. The S2 SE has larger 10-inch tires but no suspension. Not sure which tire type suits your roads? Read solid vs air filled tires.
At 31.5 lbs, the S2R Plus is the lightest adult S2. Its 36V 8.7Ah battery releases with a key, so you can carry it indoors to charge while the scooter stays in the hall. A spare battery, sold separately, stretches the range from 22 to 44 miles.
It rides on 9-inch air-filled tires with split wheels, which make tire changes easier. It has a 350 W motor with 500 W peak, an electronic brake plus a disc, an LED digital display and a 5 to 6 hour charge. It suits riders who cannot bring the whole scooter near an outlet.
The S2 Lite is built for younger and smaller riders. Hiboy recommends it for ages 12 and up and rider heights from 3 ft 7 in to 5 ft 7 in, with a 180 lb maximum load.
It has a 250 W motor with 400 W peak, a 13 mph top speed and a 36V 5Ah battery for up to 10.6 miles. It weighs 21.8 lbs and rolls on 6.5-inch solid tires with no suspension. An ABS electronic brake and a rear foot brake stop it, and it charges in 3 to 5 hours. For more on choosing for a younger rider, read electric scooters for teens.
Most of the family takes a Hiboy seat. The Hiboy seat saddle fits the S2, S2 Pro, S2 SE and S2 Nova, and the S2 Max has its own S2 Max seat saddle. Both adjust from 20.9 to 30.7 inches on an aluminum post. The S2R Plus and S2 Lite are not on either fit list. Our guide to electric scooters with a seat explains when a seat helps.
Range figures come from the maker’s own testing. Hills, cold weather, a heavier rider and the fastest riding mode all bring them down. Our real range guide explains how much to expect.
