Electric bike accessories: what to buy first, from helmets to phone mounts

Most riders need the same short list: a helmet, a lock, lights, somewhere to carry things, a mirror and a phone mount. Here is what to look for in each, and what fits which bike.

The short answer

The electric bike accessories to buy first are a helmet matched to your speed and a strong lock. Next come lights if your bike lacks them, a rack, basket or bag so the bike carries the load, a mirror for traffic and a phone mount for navigation. Buy parts that fit your model: many baskets, bags and passenger kits are made for specific bikes, so check the fit list on each listing.

  • A helmet and a lock come first. Everything else depends on how and where you ride.
  • Match the helmet to your speed. A class 3 bike at 28 mph calls for more than a basic bicycle helmet.
  • Check the fit list. Baskets, bags and passenger kits are often made for one model.
  • Use a U-lock or a chain as your main lock, and a cable only as a second lock for the wheels.

What to buy first

Start with what keeps you safe and keeps the bike yours: a helmet and a lock. Then add what makes daily riding easier. Everything below is in our accessories section, and most riders end up with some version of this list:

  • Helmet, worn on every ride.
  • Lock: a U-lock or a chain, plus a cable for the wheels.
  • Lights, front and rear, if your bike does not have them built in.
  • A rack, basket or bag, so the bike carries your things instead of your back.
  • Mirror, to check traffic without turning your head.
  • Phone mount, for maps and the maker’s app.

Helmet: match it to your speed

Choose a helmet for how fast you ride, not how far. A bicycle style helmet suits pedal assist up to about 20 mph. Faster class 3 and moped style models call for more coverage, and a full face helmet is the safest choice at the top end.

Measure around your head just above the eyebrows and pick the size from the listing. Our safety gear guide explains fit and when to replace a helmet, and the advice applies to electric bikes too. Helmet rules vary by state, city and age, so check yours.

Lock: carry more than a cable

An electric bike is worth stealing, so lock it as you would a motorcycle. Put a U-lock or a heavy chain through the frame and around something fixed, and run a cable through the wheels. Take the battery with you if it comes out.

Trackers help you get a stolen bike back: the Segway Myon and Xafari list GPS and Apple Find My. Our guide to protecting your ride from theft covers where and how to lock up.

Lights and being seen

Check what your bike already has before you buy lights. Many e-bikes run lights off the main battery. The Segway Xafari lists a 1300 lumen headlight, the NAVEE Wolf X a headlight and turn signals, and the Riding’times GT33 a headlight, taillight and turn signals.

If yours has only a headlight, add a bright rear light and wear something reflective at night. Keep baskets and bags from blocking the beam: Segway’s front basket has a built-in mount that moves the headlight so it stays clear when the basket is full.

Racks, baskets and fenders

Let the bike carry the load, within its limits. Check your rack’s listed load first: the Segway MUXI and MUXI Pro list 121 lbs on the rear rack, and the Xafari and Hiboy EX11 list 55 lbs.

Bags

Frame and handlebar bags keep small things within reach without changing how the bike handles.

A backpack works for short trips, but on longer rides a bag on the bike keeps your back cooler. Keep heavy items low, and make sure no strap can reach the wheels or brakes.

Mirror and rear radar

A mirror lets you check behind without turning your head, which matters every time you merge or change lanes. The Segway electric bike rearview mirror has HD, wide-angle glass, fits the MUXI, Myon and Xafari, and installs easily on most e-bikes.

For busy roads, the Segway electric bike rearview radar warns you of traffic up to 230 ft behind with sound, light and on-screen alerts. It fits the Myon, MUXI and MUXI Pro and runs on the bike’s own battery.

Phone mount

A handlebar mount keeps maps in view, so you never hold a phone in traffic. Look for a firm clamp and grips that hold the phone still over bumps.

Set your route before you ride, and keep glances at the screen short.

Other add-ons worth a look

  • Pads and wrist guards: the Hiboy 3-in-1 protective gear set includes knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards, sized by body weight and listed for bicycles as well as scooters.
  • Dropper post: the Segway Xiro dropper post lowers the seat by itself as you stop, so both feet reach the ground. It fits the Myon, MUXI and MUXI Pro and needs professional installation.
  • Tools: a pump with a gauge and a set of hex keys handle most roadside fixes.

Questions riders ask

What accessories do I need for an electric bike?

A helmet and a strong lock first. Then lights if your bike lacks them, a rack, basket or bag, a mirror and a phone mount, depending on how you ride.

Do I need a special helmet for an electric bike?

At pedal assist speeds up to about 20 mph, a bicycle style helmet is the usual choice. On faster class 3 or moped style models, a helmet with more coverage protects more. Check your state and city helmet rules too.

What kind of lock is best for an electric bike?

A U-lock or a heavy chain through the frame, plus a cable for the wheels. Take the battery with you when it comes out, and bring the bike inside when you can.

Will any basket or rack fit my e-bike?

Not always. Many are made for specific models, such as the Segway front basket for the MUXI, MUXI Pro, Myon and Xafari. Check the fit list on the listing, or ask us.
