Electric dirt bike speed limiter and power modes: how factory limits work

Factory limits, eco and sport modes, speed levels, regen and reverse. Here is what each one does, which bikes in our catalog have them, and how to use them to learn safely.

The short answer

An electric dirt bike speed limiter is a setting in the bike’s controller that caps its speed or power. Some limits are fixed at the factory: the Riding’times Safety Editions ship limited to 750 W and 15 mph. Others are modes you pick: the Talaria Komodo has Eco, Sport, Hyper and Reverse, the Surron Light Bee X has Sports and Eco, and the Altis Delta has three speed levels of 15, 37 and 62 mph. Start in the lowest mode, move up as your skills grow, and never try to remove a factory limit.

  • Factory limits are fixed before the bike ships. Selectable modes let the rider or a parent choose.
  • Lower modes soften the throttle, cap the speed and usually stretch the range.
  • Regen and reverse are modes too: some bikes let you set how hard regen slows you.
  • Removing a limit can damage the bike and make it unsafe. Choose the bike with the speed you need.

What a speed limiter does

An electric motor does what the controller tells it. The controller sits between the battery and the motor, and it decides how much power to send when you twist the throttle. A speed limiter or power mode is simply a rule in that controller.

  • Factory limits are set by the maker before the bike ships and are meant to stay that way.
  • Selectable modes are chosen with a button, switch or display menu, often called eco, sport or speed levels.
  • Parent and app settings let an adult choose the mode on some kids and youth bikes, or on bikes with a phone app.

All three work the same way underneath. They cap top speed, soften how quickly power arrives, or both.

Factory-limited bikes

A factory limit gives you full-size hardware at a calmer pace. Riding’times builds Safety Editions of its GT54 and GT73 families, limited to 750 W and 15 mph before they ship. Riding’times says there is nothing to change after delivery. Each one keeps the standard model’s frame, battery, suspension and brakes.

Bikes for young children use the same idea with very low limits and parent-set modes. Our kids electric dirt bike guide covers those.

Selectable modes, by maker

Each maker names and sets its modes differently. Here is what the makers list for bikes in our catalog:

  • Talaria Komodo 2025: Eco, Sport, Hyper and Reverse.
  • Surron Light Bee X: Sports and Eco, with regen in Sports mode.
  • Altis Delta: three speed levels of 15, 37 and 62 mph on the Delta, and 22, 37 and 60 mph on the 8 kW Delta S.
  • NANROBOT KD2W14 and NANROBOT GTR: three speed modes each.
  • NAVEE Storm X Pro: NAVEE quotes its 75 mile range in Eco mode at about 15.5 mph. The Storm X and Storm X Pro both have an app.
  • Riding’times GT73: pedals with a cadence sensor for pedal assist. Riding’times rates it at 85 miles on the throttle and 155 miles with pedal assist.

Maker figures, checked September 2026. Real range and speed depend on rider weight, terrain, temperature and riding mode.

The table shows each bike’s top figure. In a lower mode it will be slower, and in Eco it will usually go further.

What changes from mode to mode

  • Throttle response. Low modes feed power in gently, so the same twist of the wrist gives a softer launch. That matters most on loose dirt and on climbs, where a sudden surge spins the rear tire.
  • Top speed. Speed levels like the Altis Delta’s cap the speed outright. Eco modes often cap it too.
  • Power and acceleration. Sport and hyper modes unlock the full current the controller allows, which is where the fastest launches come from.
  • Range. Softer modes use less energy. Our electric dirt bike range guide explains how much riding style changes real miles.

A bike can also limit itself. Many controllers cut power to protect the battery and motor when the battery runs low or the system gets too hot. If your bike suddenly feels slow, stop, let it cool and check the charge. If it keeps happening, power it off and follow the maker’s manual.

Regen, reverse and riding aids

Regenerative braking turns the motor into a generator when you roll off the throttle or brake, slowing the bike and returning a little energy to the battery. Some bikes let you set its strength: Altis lists five levels of regen on the Sigma and three on the Omega. Strong regen feels like engine braking on a gas bike. Light regen lets the bike roll more freely.

Reverse is a slow mode for backing out of tight spots, such as a garage or a dead-end trail. Use it at walking pace with your feet down. The Talaria Komodo lists Reverse among its modes.

Riding aids go beyond speed. NAVEE gives the Storm G Smart Wheelie-Assist, which NAVEE says helps you hold a smooth wheelie for up to 30 seconds. Learn it in open space, in full gear.

Using modes to learn

Modes let one bike grow with the rider. Stay in the lowest mode until each of these feels easy:

  • Smooth starts and stops on flat ground, with steady throttle control.
  • Braking hard in a straight line without locking a wheel.
  • Turning at walking pace and at trail pace.
  • Standing on the pegs over bumps and small obstacles.
  • Climbing and descending gentle hills under control.

Move up one step at a time, on ground you already know. For more on first rides, read electric dirt bikes for beginners, and for teen riders see electric dirt bikes for teens.

Why we never unlock a limiter

We do not explain how to remove or raise a speed limit, and we do not recommend it. A factory limit is part of how the maker designed the bike.

  • Safety. More speed than the rider, brakes or tires were chosen for raises the risk of a crash.
  • Damage. Pushing more current through the controller, motor, wiring and battery than they were set for can overheat them.
  • Cover. Changes outside the maker’s manual or app may not be covered by the maker. See our warranty page for covered faults.

If you want more speed, choose a bike that offers it from the factory. Our guide to electric dirt bike top speed sorts our catalog into 30, 50 and 70 mph tiers. For anything electrical, power off, follow the maker’s manual and send battery, controller and wiring work to a qualified technician.

Limits and where you ride

A lower speed does not make an off-road bike road legal. Every electric dirt bike here is for off-road use only, limited or not. Ride on private land with permission, at riding parks and tracks, and on trails open to off-road motorcycles. Our guide to where to ride electric dirt bikes covers the options, and rules vary by state, so check before you go.

Questions riders ask

Can you remove the speed limiter on an electric dirt bike?

We do not recommend it and do not explain how. It can damage the controller, motor and battery, make the bike unsafe and may not be covered by the maker. Choose a bike with the speed you want from the factory.

What do eco and sport modes do on an electric dirt bike?

Eco softens the throttle, often caps the speed and stretches the range. Sport gives the full power the controller allows. NAVEE, for example, quotes the Storm X Pro’s 75 mile range in Eco mode at about 15.5 mph.

Can a factory-limited bike be changed back to full power?

Treat a factory limit as permanent. Riding’times limits its Safety Editions to 750 W and 15 mph before they ship. If you want more speed, the standard GT54 and GT73 models are separate bikes.

Which electric dirt bikes have a reverse mode?

In our catalog, the Talaria Komodo 2025 lists Reverse with its Eco, Sport and Hyper modes. Use it at walking pace to back out of tight spots.

Why does my electric dirt bike feel slower than usual?

Check the mode first, then the battery. Many controllers reduce power when the battery is low or hot. Let it cool and charge it. If it continues, power off, follow the maker’s manual and contact us or the maker.
