A cargo e-bike replaces car trips only if it carries what you load and stays steady doing it. Here is how to read payload and rack ratings, and which of our models are built to haul.
The short answer
A good cargo electric bike lists a total payload high enough for you plus everything you carry, a rack rated for the load you put on it, and a low, stable stance with strong hydraulic brakes. The Segway MUXI and MUXI Pro list a 418 lbs total payload and a 121 lbs rear rack, and Segway sells passenger kits for both. Carry a passenger only on a model and kit the maker approves, and check your local rules first.
A cargo electric bike is built to carry more than a rider and a backpack. Some stretch the rear of the frame for a long rack. Compact cargo bikes use smaller, sturdier wheels with racks and baskets front, middle and rear. Moped style models add a long seat, fat tires and a heavier frame. In each case the motor makes a loaded bike feel close to an empty one when you pull away.
The trade off is size and weight. Most of the models below weigh over 70 lbs before you load them, so plan where the bike will live. Our guide to how to choose an electric bike compares frame styles side by side.
Every cargo bike lists a total payload, and many also list a rack load. The total payload is everything the bike carries: you, any passenger, your bags and whatever sits on the racks. The rack load is the most one rack may hold. Stay under both, and leave a margin of about 20 percent if you ride hills.
A worked example: a 190 lb rider with 60 lbs on the rear rack and 20 lbs in a front basket adds up to 270 lbs. On the MUXI that fits inside the total payload, the rider limit and the rack load with room to spare. On a bike rated for 300 lbs, it leaves almost no margin.
Where the load sits matters as much as how much it weighs. Heavy items belong low and close to the center of the bike, where they barely change the steering. A tall, heavy load on the rear rack makes the bike top heavy at walking pace and when you stop.
Strap loose loads down, keep straps well clear of the wheels and brakes, and make sure nothing covers your rear light.
A long rack or seat is not an invitation to carry someone. A passenger changes the balance and the braking of the bike, and only some models are designed for it. Carry a passenger only if the maker sells a passenger setup for your model, and only within its limits.
Segway makes passenger kits for its two compact cargo bikes. The MUXI passenger kit adds a padded rear seat rated to 121 lbs, aluminum footpegs and wheel guards. The MUXI Pro passenger kit adds a thickly padded seat, forward placed footpegs and wheel guards. Rider and passenger together still count toward the 418 lbs total payload.
The long bench on a moped style e-bike is the same story: it is not a passenger seat unless the maker says so. Our comparison of moped style e-bikes and electric scooters covers seats and riding position.
Check the rules before you carry anyone. Laws on passengers and children on electric bikes vary by state and city, and some set age limits or helmet rules. Check your state and local rules, use only maker approved seats and fittings, and make sure every passenger wears a helmet.
Practice with a light load in an empty lot before you carry anything heavy. Starting, stopping and slow turns all feel different with weight on board.
Stopping a loaded bike takes more brake. Look for hydraulic disc brakes and large rotors. The MUXI and MUXI Pro list hydraulic discs with 180 mm rotors, and the GT33 lists hydraulic discs front and rear with an e-brake that cuts the motor.
Torque helps you set off with a load. The MUXI and MUXI Pro list 80 Nm, and the GT33 uses a geared rear hub with 1,350 W peak. On long climbs, hold a steady pace and use a lower gear where you have one. Extra weight also cuts range, so buy with a margin. Our sibling guide to electric bike range shows how much.

| Segway MUXI Electric Bike | 23 | 80 | 750 |
| Segway MUXI Pro Electric Bike | 28 | 73 | 750 |

| Segway Xafari Electric Bike | 20 | 88 | 750 |

Maker figures, checked September 2026. Real range and speed depend on rider weight, terrain, temperature and riding mode.
Measure before you buy. The MUXI weighs 72.75 lbs, the MUXI Pro 82.2 lbs, the GT33 105 lb and the NAVEE KG05 104.7 lbs. Bikes this size suit a garage, a ground floor hallway or a bike room better than a walk-up. Fat tires add weight and change how a bike handles, and our guide to fat tire electric bikes explains the trade offs.

It depends on the model. Check the total payload, which covers rider, passenger and cargo, and the rack load. The Segway MUXI and MUXI Pro list 418 lbs in total and 121 lbs on the rear rack.
Only with a seat or kit the maker approves for your model, and only where your state and city rules allow it. Rules on child passengers, ages and helmets vary, so check them before you ride.
Not once you are moving. Starting, stopping and slow turns feel different with weight on board, so practice with a light load first and keep heavy items low and centered.
Only if the maker says the model is built for one and your local law allows it. A long seat alone does not make a bike safe for two.
