Commuter electric bikes: what makes a good one for daily riding

A commuter e-bike earns its keep on wet mornings and late rides home, not on sunny weekends. Here is what to look for, and the models in our catalog built for it.

The short answer

A good commuter electric bike keeps you dry, seen and on time. Look for fenders, front and rear lights, a rear rack, an advertised range about double your round trip, and a weight you can lift where you park. Round it out with disc brakes, an upright or step-through frame and a removable battery if you charge at work. In our catalog, the Segway MUXI, MUXI Pro and Myon and the Hiboy EX9 are built for daily city riding.

  • Fenders, lights and a rack matter more on a commuter than top speed. Check which come standard and which are add-ons.
  • Shop for an advertised range about double your longest regular round trip, so cold days and an ageing battery never strand you.
  • Weight decides whether stairs, elevators and bike rooms are easy. Our commuters that list a weight run from 59.5 lb to 82.2 lbs.
  • A removable battery lets you charge at your desk and take the battery with you when you lock up outside.

What a commuter electric bike needs

A commuter electric bike is built for the same trip, every day, in most weather. Speed and power matter less than the things that make a daily ride easy. Five features cover most of it:

  • Fenders keep road spray off your clothes and grit off the chain.
  • Lights front and rear, ideally powered by the main battery so they are charged whenever the bike is.
  • A rear rack or basket, so the bike carries your bag instead of your back.
  • Range with a margin for cold mornings, detours and an ageing battery.
  • A weight you can manage at both ends of the trip: stairs, an elevator, a bike room.

Disc brakes, an upright riding position and a battery you can take inside complete the list. Before you buy, check which of these come standard and which are sold as add-ons. If you are still choosing a class and a motor type, start with how to choose an electric bike.

Fenders and water resistance

Full fenders are the difference between arriving dry and arriving with a stripe up your back. They also keep dirt off the drivetrain and brakes, which means less cleaning. Some commuters ship with fenders and some sell them separately: Segway offers a MUXI fender set with aluminum fenders for both wheels and a rust resistant finish.

Check the water rating too. The Hiboy EX9 lists IPX4 for the bike and IPX5 for the battery. Segway lists IPX7 for the battery and IPX5 for the body on the MUXI, MUXI Pro and Myon. These ratings cover rain and splashes, not deep puddles or a hose. The higher the second digit, the more water a part is tested against.

Lights and being seen

Lights that run off the main battery never need their own charger. Several commuters in our catalog have them. The NANROBOT N1 has front and rear lights, and the NAVEE Wolf X pairs a headlight with turn signals. The Segway MUXI Pro has turn signals too, so both hands stay on the bars when you change lanes.

If your bike has only a headlight, add a bright rear light and wear something reflective after dark. A mirror helps a lot in traffic: Segway’s electric bike rearview mirror fits the MUXI, Myon and Xafari and installs on most e-bikes.

Racks, baskets and carrying a bag

A rack takes the load off your back, and on a hot day that matters as much as the motor. Check two numbers: the rack load, and the total payload, which covers you plus everything you carry.

  • The Segway MUXI and MUXI Pro list a 121 lbs rear rack load and a 418 lbs total payload, with a 265 lbs rider weight limit.
  • Segway’s front basket fits the MUXI, MUXI Pro, Myon and Xafari and carries up to 33.1 lbs. A built-in mount moves the headlight so the beam stays clear when the basket is full.
  • The MUXI middle basket adds 9 L of storage low in the center of the bike, and a flap in the bottom lets the battery out without removing the basket.

Range: plan for the worst day of the week

Shop for an advertised range about double your longest regular round trip. Makers measure range in gentle conditions, often in a low assist level. Winter mornings, headwinds, a heavy bag and the throttle all bring it down, and the battery holds a little less each year.

Commuters in our catalog cover a wide spread. The Segway MUXI and Segway Myon are both rated for up to 80 miles, with batteries of 717Wh and 722Wh. Hiboy rates the EX9 at 62 miles with pedal assist and 31 miles on electric power alone, tested with a 143 lb rider.

A removable battery lets you charge at your desk and carry the battery inside when the bike stays out. The Hiboy EX9, the NAVEE Wolf X and the NANROBOT commuters all list one. For a closer look at how far you will really get, read our guide to electric bike range.

Weight, stairs and storage

Most commuting problems happen off the bike. A bike you cannot carry up two flights of stairs ends up locked outside, or not ridden at all. Of the commuter models that list a weight, the Hiboy EX9 is the lightest at 59.5 lb. The Segway MUXI and Myon list 72.75 lbs, and the MUXI Pro lists 82.2 lbs.

If you live in a walk-up, ride to a train or store the bike in a closet, a folding model may suit you better. The NANROBOT N1 folds and has an adjustable seat and handlebar, and our guide to folding electric bikes covers folded size and weight.

Comfort, gears and brakes for stop-and-go riding

  • Step-through frames make every red light easier, especially with a bag on the rack. The MUXI, MUXI Pro and Wolf X are step-through designs.
  • Suspension softens potholes. The Myon has 80 mm of front travel and the MUXI Pro 70 mm, and the Wolf X pairs an 80 mm air fork with a suspension seatpost. The MUXI uses a rigid fork.
  • Torque sensors match the help to how hard you pedal, which feels natural when you set off in traffic. The Myon has one, and Hiboy lists a dual-sided torque sensor on the EX9.
  • Gears. The Myon and MUXI Pro use 9-speed electronic auto shifting. The MUXI is single speed, with less to adjust and clean.
  • Brakes. Hydraulic discs need little hand effort and stay consistent in the wet. The Segway commuters list hydraulic discs with 180 mm rotors, and the EX9 lists front and rear hydraulic discs.

Parking and theft

Plan where the bike sleeps before you buy it. Inside is always best. When you have to lock up outside, use a strong lock through the frame and take the battery and anything that unclips. The Segway Myon lists GPS and Apple Find My tracking, and the MUXI and MUXI Pro list Apple Find My. Our guide to protecting your ride from theft covers locks and parking, and it applies to electric bikes too.

Questions riders ask

What is the best type of electric bike for commuting?

One with fenders, lights, a rack, an upright riding position and enough range for your round trip with a margin. If you face stairs or take a train for part of the trip, a folding model may suit you better than a full size commuter.

How much range do I need for a commuter electric bike?

About double your longest regular round trip. If your ride is 8 miles each way, look at models advertised at 30 miles or more. The margin covers cold days, headwinds and battery ageing.

Can I ride a commuter electric bike in the rain?

Light rain is fine for most models with a water rating such as IPX4 or higher. Avoid deep standing water, never hose the bike down, and dry it after a wet ride.

Is a class 3 electric bike good for commuting?

It suits longer road commutes, because pedal assist continues to 28 mph. Many places keep class 3 off some bike paths, so check your state and city rules for your route. The Segway Myon is listed as class 1, 2 or 3.

Do I need a lock if my e-bike has GPS?

Yes. GPS or Apple Find My can help you find a stolen bike, but only a lock slows a thief down. Use both, and bring the bike inside when you can.
