Electric scooter app and smart features: locks, GPS, NFC, displays and what they do

Apps, NFC cards and built-in tracking show up on more scooters every year. Here is what each feature actually does, which models list it, and which ones are worth paying attention to.

Published Oct 8, 20267 min read

The short answer

An electric scooter app connects your phone to the scooter, usually over Bluetooth. Depending on the model, it locks and unlocks the scooter, sets modes and speed limits, controls lights and shows battery and ride data. Around the app sit other smart features: NFC cards that start the scooter, Apple Find My, AirTag slots or GPS for tracking, digital displays and turn signals. Read what each listing actually names, and remember that an app lock never replaces a real lock.

  • The app usually handles settings the handlebar buttons cannot: speed limits, locks, lights and updates.
  • NFC cards, phones or watches can replace a key, and some models add a mechanical key as a backup.
  • Tracking comes three ways: Apple Find My built in, a hidden AirTag slot, or GPS with the maker’s app.
  • Smart locks stop a ride-away, not a carry-away. Pair them with a U-lock or chain.

What an electric scooter app does

The app is a remote control and a settings menu for things the handlebar has no room for. Features vary a lot between models, so read the listing. Some examples from our catalog:

  • Parent controls: the NAVEE K100 kids scooter app sets a speed limit, controls the lights and locks the scooter, which makes it a parent’s tool as much as a rider’s.
  • Phone and watch control: the YUME XTRON uses the YUME Mobility app on iOS and Android, and unlocks with NFC cards, a phone or a watch.
  • Smart home platforms: the JOYOR T10 works with the Smart Life and Tuya Smart apps, and unlocks with an NFC card or the app over Bluetooth.
  • Lights: Miniwalker lists app-controlled lights on the Miniwalker Tiger 10 Pro+.
  • Bluetooth basics: E-TWOW pairs the E-TWOW GT SL with the E-TWOW app over Bluetooth, and INMOTION lists the INMOTION app for the INMOTION Climber.

Not every scooter needs an app. Hiboy lists App Sync as no on the Hiboy S2 SE and yes on the Hiboy S2 Nova. No app means a simpler scooter, and an app means more control. How apps set ride modes, speed caps and unlocks is covered in electric scooter speed modes, so we will not repeat it here.

Questions to ask before you rely on an app

  • Does the scooter ride without it? Check whether the modes, lights and power switch work from the handlebar too, so a flat phone does not leave you stuck.
  • Does it support your phone? YUME lists iOS and Android for its app. Check the listing or the maker for other brands.
  • Does tracking need anything extra? Ask the maker whether built-in GPS needs a separate account, a data plan or a subscription.
  • Who holds the account? On a family scooter, decide who controls the settings so a speed limit stays set.
  • How do updates arrive? Updates can change modes and limits, so read the notes before you install one.

NFC cards, keys and keyless start

NFC (near field communication) lets the scooter switch on when you tap a card, phone or watch against the reader. No card, no ride.

  • NFC cards: the iENYRID S3 and the JOYOR E6-S unlock with an NFC card, and Teewing lists NFC start on the Teewing Z4 Pro.
  • NFC in the display: Kaabo builds NFC into the central display of the Kaabo Warrior X Max, next to a 2A USB port, and the DriveTron Nova has a color display with keyless NFC start.
  • Cards, phone, watch and keys: the YUME Raptor2 unlocks with 2 NFC cards, a phone or a watch, and also comes with 2 mechanical keys. The XTRON includes an emergency key with a Safe Mode.
  • Remote and NFC: Teverun lists a remote plus NFC lock on the Teverun Fighter Mini PRO and the Teverun Blade Mini Ultra.
  • Other ways in: the NANROBOT C1 Pro uses a key lock switch, and the Miniwalker Tiger 10 Pro+ a digital password lock.

Keep the spare card at home, somewhere you will remember. If the only card goes missing, starting the scooter gets much harder.

Find My, AirTag slots and GPS

Tracking comes in three forms on the scooters we carry:

Tracking helps you find a scooter after it is gone, but it does not stop the theft. Our guide to protecting your electric scooter from theft covers locks, parking and keeping records.

An app lock is not a lock. It stops someone riding away, but the scooter can still be lifted and carried off. Use it every time, together with a U-lock or chain through the frame.

Displays and dashboards

The display is the smart feature you look at on every ride. What it shows matters more than its size.

  • Compact: E-TWOW fits a full color 1.18 x 1.02 in display to the GT SL and GT Sport.
  • Mid-size: the Segway E2 Pro has a 2.8 in LED dashboard, the E-TWOW TankTorq TK2 Lite a 2.8 in outdoor TFT display, and the NAVEE V40i a 3.5 in suspended display.
  • Large: the NAVEE V25 has a 4-inch display with a 14° tilt, Teverun fits a 4-inch TFT to the Fighter Mini PRO, and the INMOTION RS JET has a 4.3-inch color touchscreen.
  • Navigation: the YUME XTRON has a 3.5 in TFT with navigation.

At a glance, look for speed, battery level, the current mode and trip distance. The Gyroor C1S display shows speed, battery, mode, trip and total distance. Water resistance matters too: YUME lists IP66 for the Raptor2 display, and Miniwalker IP65 for the Tiger 10 Pro+ TFT.

Turn signals and connected lighting

Turn signals are now part of the smart package, worked from buttons on the bar. Our guide to electric scooter lights covers headlights, brake lights and signals in depth, so here are just a few models that pair signals with other smart features:

  • The E-TWOW GT Sport Limited Edition has turn signals built into the handlebar, plus the E-TWOW app.
  • The NAVEE V40i puts turn signals on the handlebar, next to its app and AirTag slot.
  • The YUME Raptor2 pairs 2 turn signals and brake lights with NFC, phone and watch unlock.
  • The JOYOR T10 pairs turn signals and a brake light with NFC and app unlock.

Riding aids and battery smarts

  • Traction control (TCS) helps when a wheel starts to slip. NAVEE and Segway list it on models such as the NAVEE XT5 Pro, the NAVEE GT3 and the Segway ZT3 Pro.
  • Cruise control holds a steady speed on long, clear stretches. NANROBOT lists it on the NANROBOT C1.
  • Smart battery management: NAVEE lists a Smart BMS with 6 protections on the NAVEE V25, and INMOTION a smart BMS with cell balancing on the Climber.

The same ideas are spreading to e-bikes. AOTOS lists keyless unlock, display navigation sync, and, on the Pro version, 4G and GPS tracking and tire pressure monitoring for the AOTOS FLUX X26 series.

Which smart features are worth it

  • Commuters who park outside: tracking through Find My, an AirTag slot or GPS, plus a strong physical lock.
  • Parents: an app that sets a speed limit, like the NAVEE K100, and tracking, like the K100 Max.
  • Households that share a scooter: NFC cards, one per rider.
  • Riders after dark: turn signals and a display that is easy to read.
  • Everyone: firmware updates from the maker, and controls that still work without the phone.

Questions riders ask

Do I need the app to ride my electric scooter?

On many models, no: the basic modes and lights work from the handlebar. Some features, such as speed limits, updates or app locking, may need it. Check the listing and the manual for your model.

What is NFC on an electric scooter?

NFC lets you start or unlock the scooter by tapping a card, phone or watch against the reader. The YUME Raptor2, for example, comes with 2 NFC cards and also unlocks with a phone or a watch.

Can I track a stolen electric scooter?

If it has tracking. Segway and NAVEE build Apple Find My into many models, some NAVEE models have a hidden AirTag slot, and Teverun lists built-in GPS on some models. Report a theft to the police and share the location with them.

Does an app lock stop theft?

It stops someone riding away, but a scooter can still be lifted and carried. Always use a U-lock or chain through the frame as well.

Can parents limit the speed with an app?

On some models. The NAVEE K100 kids scooter app sets a speed limit, controls the lights and locks the scooter. Check the listing for each model you are considering.
