How to choose an electric scooter

Start with how you will ride. A daily trip of a few miles on pavement needs a different electric scooter than weekend trail runs or a 30-mile round trip. Then check the maker’s numbers:

  • Top speed. Commuter models sit at 15–28 mph. Performance electric scooters start at 40 mph and go well beyond that. Faster models are heavier and cost more, so buy the speed you will actually use.
  • Range. Makers quote range under ideal conditions: a light rider, flat ground, a gentle pace. Plan on less in real riding, and pick a rated range with room to spare over your longest regular trip.
  • Rider weight. Every electric scooter carries a maximum rider weight. Riding near or above it shortens range, slows hills and wears brakes faster. Riders over 300 lb should start with our electric scooters for heavy adults.
  • Weight and folding. If you will carry it up stairs or onto a train, weight matters more than anything else. The foldable and lightweight collection keeps to 45 lb or less.
  • Tires and suspension. Air-filled tires ride softer; solid tires never go flat. Suspension matters on rough streets and is standard on off-road models.

Stand-up, seated and three-wheel electric scooters

Most electric scooters are stand-up. Seated models add a saddle for comfort on longer rides, and several stand-up models offer a seat as an option. Three-wheel electric scooters add stability at low speeds. All three types are on this page; the electric scooters with seat collection groups the seated and three-wheel models together.

Battery voltage, motors and range

Battery voltage (36V, 48V, 52V, 60V, 72V) is a rough guide to performance: higher voltage usually means stronger acceleration and a higher top speed. Battery size in watt-hours (Wh) is the better guide to range. Single motor electric scooters are lighter and more efficient; dual motor electric scooters climb steeper hills and accelerate harder. Most dual motor models let you ride on one motor to stretch range.

Brands we carry

We stock electric scooters from KUKIRIN, Teverun, NAMI, Teewing, Segway, YUME, Kaabo, Ausom, Phantomgogo, INMOTION, WEPED, E-TWOW, JOYOR, NAVEE, NANROBOT and more. See all brands.

Where you can ride

Rules for electric scooters vary by state and city, including speed limits, age minimums and where you may ride. Check your local rules before you buy a faster model. VERIFY: legal wording to be reviewed by counsel before publishing.

Shipping, assembly, returns and warranty

Every electric scooter ships free to the lower 48 states. Most arrive nearly assembled; you typically attach the handlebars, check tire pressure and charge the battery before the first ride. Unused electric scooters can be returned within 14 days (see the shipping policy), and each maker’s warranty terms are on the warranty page.

Questions

Asked and answered

How fast do electric scooters for adults go?

Commuter models usually top out between 15 and 28 mph. Performance models start at 40 mph, and the fastest electric scooters we sell are rated by their makers for 60 mph and up. Each product page lists the maker’s top speed.

How far can an electric scooter go on one charge?

Anywhere from about 15 miles on a light commuter to 50 miles or more on long range models. Maker ratings assume ideal conditions, so expect less with a heavier rider, hills, cold weather or full-speed riding.

Which electric scooter is best for heavier riders?

Look at the maker’s maximum rider weight first, then motor power and suspension. Our electric scooters for heavy adults collection lists only models rated for 300 lb or more.

Are electric scooters street legal?

It depends on where you live. States and cities set their own rules on speed, age and where electric scooters may be ridden. Check your local rules, especially for models rated above 20 mph.

Do electric scooters come assembled?

Mostly. Typical setup is attaching the handlebars or stem, checking tire pressure and charging the battery fully. Product pages note anything more involved.

Can I pay for an electric scooter over time?

Yes. Affirm, Klarna and Afterpay are available at checkout. Pay in 4 plans are 0% interest; longer monthly plans carry interest set by the provider. Financing covers up to $5,000 per order. Details are on the financing page.
