Electric scooter accessories: what to buy first and what is worth adding

A helmet, a strong lock and better lights matter more than anything else you can bolt on. After that, choose accessories made for your model.

Published Oct 7, 20267 min read

The short answer

The electric scooter accessories to buy first are a helmet that fits, a strong lock and lights that help drivers see you. After that, add what your rides call for: a phone mount for maps, a bag for small things, a seat kit for longer trips, a spare or fast charger from your scooter’s maker, mirrors for traffic and a pump for air-filled tires. Check the fit list on each accessory before you buy, since many are made for specific models.

  • Safety first: a helmet, a lock and lights before anything else.
  • Accessories made by your scooter’s maker are the surest fit. Check the model list on each one.
  • Buy chargers only from the maker of your scooter, for your exact model.
  • Keep heavy loads off the handlebar. They change how the scooter steers.

What to buy first

Some accessories protect you, some protect the scooter, and some just make riding nicer. Buy them in that order. Everything below is on our accessories page, and most items list exactly which models they fit.

Helmet and pads

A helmet is the one accessory to buy with the scooter. Match it to your top speed, as our safety gear guide explains, and measure around your head just above the eyebrows to pick the size.

Lock

Buy a lock you would trust on a bicycle, and use a cable only as a second lock. Our guide on how to protect your electric scooter from theft shows how to lock up properly.

Lights

Most electric scooters come with a headlight and a rear light, but many sit low and light only the ground near the wheel. A brighter front light mounted higher helps you see and be seen.

The NANROBOT 5-LED Headlight reaches up to 2,800 lumens, runs about 7 to 12 hours depending on the mode and is rated IP65. It mounts on the NANROBOT Handlebar Extender, an 11.8 in bar for the N6, D6+, D4+, Lightning and LS7+ that also makes room for a phone holder. Aim a bright light slightly down so it does not dazzle people coming the other way, and add a flashing rear light and something reflective.

Phone mount

A phone mount keeps maps and the maker’s app in view, so the phone stays out of your hand. Check two numbers before you buy: your phone size and your handlebar diameter.

Set your route before you set off, and glance at the screen rather than stare.

Bags and carrying

Keep it light up front. A heavy bag on the handlebar makes the steering feel slow and can swing in turns. Heavier things belong in a backpack.

Seat kits

A seat turns a standing scooter into a sit-down ride for longer trips, but it only fits the models it was made for:

Some places treat seated scooters differently, so check your local rules before you fit one.

Spare and fast chargers

A second charger lets you keep one at work, and a fast charger cuts the wait. Buy only one made by your scooter’s maker for your exact model. The wrong voltage can damage the battery or start a fire.

YUME, for example, sells a 2A charger for the Raptor2, plus a 5A fast charger rated at about 6 hours and a 10A fast charger at about 3 hours. The YUME Raptor2 ships with two 2A chargers for about 7 to 8 hours. The E-TWOW Charger Bag gives the GT Sport or Booster ES charger a padded home on the scooter. For the full picture, see electric scooter charging time and cost.

Mirrors

A mirror shows what is coming up behind you in a bike lane or on the road. The Segway Rear-View Mirror is a pair of 3-axis HD convex mirrors on silicone straps for the Max G3, Max G3 Plus, Max G2, F3, F2, E3 Pro, E2 Pro and E2 Plus II. The YUME Raptor2 comes with two mirrors. Use a mirror as well as a look over your shoulder, not instead of one. New to traffic? Read how to ride an electric scooter.

Tire care

For air-filled tires, a pump and a gauge are the accessories you will use most. Soft tires cut range and make flats more likely. The E-TWOW Air Compressor Pump is a pocket-size pump that reaches up to 150 PSI, charges over USB-C and stops by itself at the pressure you set, with adapters for TankTorq tires and bike and car valves. Our tire pressure guide covers how often to check.

Solid tires need no air. When any tire wears out, match the size and type listed for your model, and contact us if you are not sure what fits.

How to check an accessory fits

  • Read the fit list on the accessory page. Many name the exact models they suit.
  • Measure your handlebar diameter for phone holders, bags and lights.
  • Check the weight limit of seats and bags against what you will carry.
  • Stick to the maker’s own chargers and batteries.

Questions riders ask

What accessories do I need for an electric scooter?

Start with a helmet, a strong lock and good lights. Then add what your rides need: a phone mount, a bag, a seat kit, mirrors, a pump for air-filled tires or a spare charger.

Will a phone holder fit my electric scooter?

Check the clamp range against your handlebar diameter and the phone size range against your phone. The Segway holder, for example, clamps 18 to 36 mm handlebars and takes 4 to 6.5 in screens.

Can I add a seat to any electric scooter?

No. Seat kits are made for specific models, such as the Segway kit for the E3 Pro, F3 and ZT3 Pro. Check the fit list, and check your local rules for seated scooters.

Can I use a different charger with my electric scooter?

Only one made by your scooter’s maker for your model. A charger with the wrong voltage can damage the battery or start a fire, even if the plug fits.

Is a cable lock enough for an electric scooter?

Not on its own, because cables cut quickly. Use a U-lock or a heavy chain through the frame, and a cable only as a second lock.
