Electric mini motorbike explained: how it compares with dirt bikes and mopeds

Electric mini motorbikes sit between a moped-style e-bike and a full electric dirt bike. Here is what sets each type apart, and which one suits the riding you plan to do.

Published Nov 1, 20267 min read

The short answer

An electric mini motorbike is a light, motorcycle-shaped off-road bike with a battery and hub motor, such as the Riding’times GT54 and GT73. It sits between two other types. A full electric dirt bike, such as the Surron Light Bee X, has a stronger motor, longer suspension and a taller seat. A moped-style e-bike, such as the Riding’times GT33, has fat tires, pedals and a bench seat, and is sold as an electric bike. Mini motorbikes weigh about 100 to 125 lb, list 40 to 50 mph on the standard models and are for off-road use only.

  • Electric mini motorbikes use a hub motor, a lithium battery and dirt bike geometry in a lighter, simpler package.
  • Full electric dirt bikes add more power, longer suspension and a taller seat, at a higher price band.
  • Moped-style e-bikes have pedals, fat tires and a bench seat, and are sold as electric bikes, not dirt bikes.
  • Every mini motorbike we carry is for off-road use only, and factory-limited Safety Editions run at 15 mph.

What an electric mini motorbike is

Electric mini motorbike is the name Riding’times uses for its GT54 and GT73. Both look like small motorcycles: a dirt bike frame, knobby tires, a long seat, a front fork and rear shock, and lights with turn signals. Under the plastic, each runs a rear hub motor fed by a lithium battery.

  • Riding’times GT54: mini and pit size, with a 14 inch front and 12 inch rear wheel, a 27.2 in seat, a 2,000 W peak motor, a removable 48V 27Ah battery, 40 mph and 106.5 lb. Riding’times lists pedals too.
  • Riding’times GT73: full size, with 19 inch wheels, a 30.3 in seat, a 2,400 W peak motor, two removable 48V 18.2Ah batteries, 28 to 37 mph and 116 lb. It has pedals with a cadence sensor for pedal assist.

What makes them mini is weight and simplicity, not always wheel size. Both stay at or under about 125 lb with the Pro versions included, use hub motors instead of a separate motor and chain drive, and cost a fraction of a full-power dirt bike. Each also comes as a Pro with a 60V battery and more speed, and as a Safety Edition factory-limited to 750 W and 15 mph.

Our sibling guides cover each family’s figures in full: GT73 top speed and range and GT54 top speed and range.

Mini motorbike vs full electric dirt bike

A full electric dirt bike is built for harder trail riding. It usually has a stronger motor, longer suspension travel, a taller seat and a higher price band. Two examples from our catalog:

  • Surron Light Bee X: an 8 kW peak motor, 196 ft-lb of torque at the wheel, a removable 60V 40Ah battery, a forged aluminium frame, 200 mm of front travel, an 830 mm seat and a 125.6 lb curb weight. Surron lists 46.6 mph and 46.6 miles at about 25 mph, and a 220 lb max load.
  • E Ride Pro Mini R: a pit size bike with a 3 kW rated, 8 kW peak motor, a swappable 72V 30Ah battery, a 26.7 in seat, 118 lb and a 143 lb rider limit. E Ride Pro lists 50 mph and 40+ miles at 20 mph.

Here is the trade. The Light Bee X weighs about the same as a GT73 Pro, but puts out far more power, with a forged aluminium frame and 200 mm of front travel. The GT73 answers with two batteries, pedals, a 330 lb max load and a 155 mile pedal assist rating, at a much lower price band. A mini motorbike suits relaxed trail rides and learning; a full dirt bike suits jumps, rough ground and riders who want more performance.

Mini motorbike vs moped-style e-bike

A moped-style e-bike looks like a small moped but is sold as an electric bike. It usually has fat tires, pedals, a bench seat and a lower top speed. Two from our catalog:

  • Riding’times GT33: a cargo build with 20 x 4.0 in fat tires, a 1,350 W peak geared hub motor, a removable 48V 27Ah battery listed to UL 2849, 31 mph, class settings 1 to 3, a 34.8 in seat, 105 lb and a 330 lb max load. Riding’times rates it for 50 to 100 miles.
  • NAVEE KG05: 20 x 4.0 in Kenda fat tires, a 500 W motor with 85 Nm, a 48V 14.5Ah battery, 7 speeds, 20 mph, up to 37 miles and 104.7 lb.

The key difference is purpose. A moped-style e-bike is built around pedals, a seat for longer sitting and settings that can match e-bike classes, which is why it lives in our electric bike shop. A mini motorbike is built around off-road riding: knobby tires, dirt bike geometry and more speed. Our guide to the electric moped covers the moped side, and the electric mopeds collection shows every seated model.

Pedals and lights do not decide the rules. Whether a ride counts as an e-bike, a moped or an off-road vehicle depends on your state’s rules for motor power, speed and equipment. This is general information, not legal advice; check with your state DMV and local rules before you ride anywhere public.

The three types side by side

Which type suits you

  • Choose a mini motorbike for relaxed off-road riding, a first motorcycle-style bike or a budget under $2,000. The GT54 fits riders from 4 ft 2 in to 5 ft 9 in, and the GT73 from 5 ft 5 in to 6 ft 3 in.
  • Choose a Safety Edition of either for a calmer start at 15 mph, with the same batteries and brakes.
  • Choose a full electric dirt bike for rough trails, jumps and more power, if you have the budget and the riding experience. Start with electric dirt bikes for beginners if you are new.
  • Choose a moped-style e-bike for seated trips on roads and paths where e-bikes are allowed, with pedals and fat tires.

Owning a mini motorbike

Electric mini motorbikes are simple to live with, but they are still motor vehicles. Check tire pressure, brakes and bolts before each ride. Charge with the supplied charger only, on a hard surface, and stay nearby while it charges. Our guide on how to charge an electric dirt bike covers the details.

For anything electrical, power the bike off and follow the maker’s manual. Send battery, controller, brake and wiring work to a qualified technician, and see our warranty page for covered faults. Wear a helmet, goggles, gloves and boots on every ride; our electric dirt bike safety gear guide lists the rest.

Browse every model in our electric dirt bikes shop and on the Riding’times brand page. Every order ships free to the lower 48 states. Rides priced $2,000 or less can use Pay in 4 at 0% APR on orders up to $2,000; above that, monthly plans with Affirm, subject to approval.
