How to fold an electric scooter: step by step, plus the checks before you ride

Folding takes seconds once you know your latch. Unfolding matters more, because a stem that is not fully locked is a real hazard. Here are the steps and the checks.

Published Nov 1, 20267 min read

The short answer

Here is how to fold an electric scooter on most models: switch it off, stand it on flat ground, lower the stem to its shortest height, fold the grips or handlebar if they fold, release the safety catch and the folding lever, then lower the stem until it clips to the rear of the deck. To unfold, reverse the steps and make sure the latch clicks fully shut. Every design is a little different, so follow the steps in your maker’s manual, and check for stem wobble before every ride.

  • Always switch the scooter off and use the kickstand before you fold or unfold it.
  • Most folds have two locks: a main lever and a safety catch. Both must be closed before you ride.
  • After unfolding, rock the handlebar with the front brake held. Any play means do not ride.
  • Your maker’s manual shows the exact order and any adjustments. Follow it over any general guide.

Know your fold first

Nearly every electric scooter folds at the stem, but the details vary, and the details are what matter when you fold it. Look at your scooter and find which of these it has:

  • A one step stem fold. One lever releases the stem. Kaabo says the Kaabo Urban folds in one step.
  • A stem fold with a second lock. A safety catch, collar or second lever stops the main lever opening by accident. iENYRID says the iENYRID S3 folds with a double-lock stem.
  • A multi point fold. The stem, handlebar and sometimes the grips fold. E-TWOW lists a patented 3-point fold on the E-TWOW GT SL, with an adjustable height stem, a folding handlebar and an auto unfolding body.
  • A fold with an automatic lock. E-TWOW lists a two-point fold with auto lock on the E-TWOW TankTorq TK2.
  • Folding grips or bars only. NANROBOT says the grips fold in on the NANROBOT T1, whose stem adjusts to three heights, and EMOVE says the bars fold for the car trunk on the EMOVE RoadRunner V3.

For how each fold type affects folded size and carrying, and which models fold smallest, read our foldable electric scooter guide. This guide is about doing the fold itself, safely.

How to fold it, step by step

These steps cover most stem folds. Where your manual differs, follow the manual.

  • 1. Switch it off. Power the scooter off so a bumped throttle cannot move it while your hands are near the stem.
  • 2. Park on flat, firm ground and put the kickstand down. Turn the front wheel straight ahead.
  • 3. Lower the stem. If the stem is telescopic, open its clamp and slide it to the shortest setting, then close the clamp again.
  • 4. Fold the grips or handlebar if your model has them. Most folding grips release with a collar or a button. Fold one side at a time.
  • 5. Open the safety catch, if there is one. It may be a collar, a pin, a button or a small second lever.
  • 6. Open the main folding lever. Keep one hand on the stem so it does not drop.
  • 7. Lower the stem to the deck. On most scooters a hook or clip on the stem meets a catch on the rear fender or deck. Press until it engages, so the scooter can be lifted as one piece.

Watch your fingers at the hinge and at the rear catch, and keep cables from getting pinched between the stem and the deck as it folds.

Never force a fold. If the lever will not open or the stem will not drop, stop and check the manual. A stuck latch can mean a missed safety catch, a stem not at its lowest height, or a part that needs adjusting by a qualified technician.

How to unfold it and lock it

Unfolding is the step that matters most for safety. A stem that looks closed but is not fully latched can fold or wobble while you ride.

  • 1. Release the rear catch and lift the stem up to vertical.
  • 2. Close the main folding lever fully. On most scooters you feel firm resistance and then a definite stop or click.
  • 3. Close the safety catch and check that it sits fully home.
  • 4. Unfold the grips or handlebar and make sure each one locks in place.
  • 5. Set the stem height and close the height clamp firmly.
  • 6. Switch on only when everything is locked.

The wobble check before every ride

Take ten seconds to check the stem every time you unfold, and before every ride.

  • Stand beside the scooter, hold the front brake on, and rock the handlebar firmly forward and back.
  • Watch and feel the hinge. There should be no knock, click or movement.
  • Twist the handlebar left and right against the front wheel. The bars should not turn on their own.
  • Pull up on the grips. Folding grips and telescopic stems must not slide or rotate.

If you feel any play, do not ride. Many folding mechanisms have an adjustment for wear, and your manual shows whether yours does and how the maker wants it set. If an adjustment in the manual does not cure it, or you are not sure, have a qualified technician look at it. A loose stem on a new scooter may be a covered fault, so check our warranty page. Our maintenance checklist adds the fold to a regular routine.

Carrying and storing it folded

Folding makes a scooter shorter, not lighter. Lift with your legs, keep your back straight and hold the scooter close.

  • Light models: E-TWOW lists the GT SL at 29.3 lbs, folded to 41.7 x 13.0 x 5.8 in, and the E-TWOW Booster ES at 25.6 lbs, folded to 38.6 x 13.0 x 5.9 in. These are carry friendly.
  • Middle weight commuters: Hiboy lists the Hiboy S2 MAX at 40 lb, folded to 45.7 x 18.9 x 20.7 in, and E-TWOW lists the TK2 at 50.2 lbs, folded to 43.5 x 19.7 x 17.0 in.
  • Larger scooters: KUKIRIN lists the KUKIRIN G2 at 57 lb, folded to 49.5 x 26 x 22 in, and NANROBOT the NANROBOT D4+MAX at 70.6 lb, folded to 51 x 24.8 x 23.2 in. Plan to roll these more than you carry them.

Maker figures, checked September 2026. Real range and speed depend on rider weight, terrain, temperature and riding mode.

Lift a folded scooter where the maker suggests, often by the stem near the hinge, rather than by folding grips. Store it in a dry place, standing on its kickstand or as the manual shows. For tight homes, our guide to electric scooter apartment storage has ideas, and our guide to electric scooter car transport covers trunks and racks.

Caring for the folding mechanism

  • Keep the hinge clean. Wipe grit and road salt off after wet rides. Our guide to how to clean an electric scooter shows how to do it without soaking the electrics.
  • Lubricate only where the manual says. Some hinges need a little grease, and some must stay dry. Keep any lubricant far away from disc brakes.
  • Watch the cables. Repeated folding bends brake and power cables. If one looks kinked, cracked or stretched, power off and have a technician replace it.
  • Never modify the latch, add aftermarket clamps or remove a safety catch. The fold is a load bearing part.

Questions riders ask

How do you fold an electric scooter?

Switch it off, put the kickstand down, lower the stem to its shortest height, fold the grips if they fold, open the safety catch and the folding lever, then lower the stem until it clips to the rear of the deck. Follow your maker’s manual for the exact order.

Why won’t my scooter fold?

The usual causes are a safety catch still closed, a stem not at its lowest height, or grit in the hinge. Never force it. Check the manual, and if it still sticks, have a qualified technician look at it.

Is it normal for a folding scooter stem to wobble?

No. A locked stem should feel solid. If the handlebar moves when you rock it with the front brake held, do not ride. Follow the manual’s adjustment, or have a technician check it.

Can I fold my scooter while it is switched on?

Switch it off first. A bumped throttle can move the scooter while your hands are near the hinge.
