Foldable electric scooter guide: fold types, folded size, weight and carrying

Nearly every electric scooter folds, but some fold flat and narrow while others stay as wide as the handlebar. Here is how the folds differ and what the numbers mean.

The short answer

A good foldable electric scooter folds in a few seconds, locks solid both open and folded, and fits the space you need it for. Most fold only at the stem. Some also fold the handlebar or grips, which cuts the width: the E-TWOW GT SL folds in three points to 41.7 x 13.0 x 5.8 in at 29.3 lbs. Check all three folded measurements against your space, then decide whether you will carry it or roll it. Past about 45 lbs, plan to roll it more than you lift it.

  • Most scooters fold only at the stem. Folding handlebars and grips make the package far narrower.
  • Compare length, width and height. Width is what blocks a train aisle or a closet door.
  • A latch that locks solid matters more than how fast the fold is.
  • Folding makes a scooter shorter, not lighter. Heavy folders are made to roll and park.

How electric scooters fold

Almost every adult electric scooter folds, but not in the same way. The design decides how small it gets, how fast it packs away and how solid it feels.

  • Stem fold. A lever or clamp at the base of the stem releases it, and the stem folds down along the deck. Most commuters fold this way. The handlebar stays full width, so the folded scooter is as wide as its bar.
  • Two-point fold with auto lock. E-TWOW lists a two-point fold that locks itself on the TankTorq TK2 and TK3.
  • Three-point fold. E-TWOW lists a three-point fold on the E-TWOW Booster ES and the GT models, which fold to under 6 in high. The Booster ES folds its handlebar and grips, and the E-TWOW GT SL adds a folding handlebar, an adjustable stem height and a body that unfolds itself.
  • Folding handlebar on a bigger scooter. The Teewing X5 has a foldable handlebar, which brings a 100 lb dual motor scooter down to a folded width of 13 in. The seated Gyroor C1S folds its handlebar too.
  • Multi-way folds. WEPED folds the FF2S four ways, at the handlebar, stem, neck and wheels. WEPED builds to order, so delivery takes longer.
  • Backpack fold. The Teewing X6 Backpack folds into its own backpack, so you carry it on your back.

Fold speed and the latch

A quick fold is nice; a solid latch is essential. The DriveTron DT10 folds in about three seconds, the GT SL in three moves and the Miniwalker Tiger 10 Pro+ in two steps. The Tiger 9 Pro folds without tools, and the iENYRID S3 has a double-lock stem.

Whatever the design, check three things when it arrives:

  • No play when open. Hold the front brake and rock the handlebar forward and back. Nothing should click, shift or flex at the hinge.
  • It stays folded when lifted, so the stem cannot swing open on a staircase or in a trunk.
  • A second catch or safety lock, so one bump cannot release the latch.

Adjust the latch only as the manual shows, and never ride with a hinge that clicks or wobbles. If it will not tighten, stop riding and contact us.

Folded size: length, width and height

Compare all three folded measurements with the space you have. Length decides trunks and closets, width decides train aisles and hallways, and height decides whether it slides under a desk or a bed. These are the makers’ folded sizes (length x width x height) and weights:

Look at the width. Most of these fold to between about 17 and 29 in wide. On the Hiboy S2 Lite and S2R Plus, the TK2 Lite, the INMOTION Climber and the KUKIRIN G2 Ultra, the folded width matches the open width, because the handlebar stays full width. Folding handlebars bring the E-TWOW GT SL and the Teewing X5 down to 13 in. Height matters for desks and car trunks: the DriveTron Nova, for example, lists a folded height of 22.4 in.

Carry it or roll it

Folding makes a scooter shorter, not lighter. Decide how you will move it once it is folded:

  • Carry, under about 30 lbs. Most adults can carry a folded scooter up stairs and onto a train every day. Hold it by the frame or a carry handle, never by the brake levers or cables. Segway’s carry bag holds the folded E2 Plus II, E2 Pro, E3 Pro or F3, with long and short straps to carry, shoulder or pull it.
  • Mostly roll, about 30 to 60 lbs. You will lift it into a trunk or up a few steps, but wheel it the rest of the way. Through a lobby or onto an elevator, it is often easier to keep it unfolded, switch it off and walk it beside you, then fold it where it is parked.
  • Ride and park, over about 60 lbs. The fold mainly helps with storage and car trunks. The KUKIRIN G2 Ultra at 67 lb and the NANROBOT D6+MAX at 88.2 lb still fold, but you will rarely want to lift them.

Parking it folded or standing. A kickstand helps it stand in a corner; AOTOS lists one on the AOTOS M1, which folds to 41.02 in long and 19.29 in high. For trunks, straps and racks, see how to transport an electric scooter in a car.

Folding seated and three-wheel models

Seats and baskets fold too, just less neatly. The Gyroor C1 folds to 43.7 x 9.8 x 21 in at 43 lb, the KUKIRIN G2 Max with its removable seat folds to 49.6 x 23.8 x 22.8 in, and the Teewing T3 three-wheel scooter folds for storage. WEPED’s Super Compo is a seated scooter that folds to 36.5 x 9.4 x 19.6 in. Where a product page lists no folded size, plan to store it at full length.

Questions riders ask

Do all electric scooters fold?

Almost all stand-up adult models do, and many seated ones. A few kids models, such as the NANROBOT K1 and the NAVEE K100, do not fold.

Is a foldable electric scooter less sturdy?

Not if the latch is well made and kept adjusted. Many dual motor models built for high speeds fold. Check the hinge for play before every ride and adjust it only as the manual shows.

Which foldable electric scooter folds smallest?

Among the folded sizes makers list, the E-TWOW Booster ES is the most compact at 38.6 x 13.0 x 5.9 in, and the E-TWOW GT models fold to 41.7 x 13.0 x 5.8 in. The Teewing X6 Backpack folds into its own backpack.

How do I move a heavy folding scooter?

Roll it. Keep it unfolded and switched off, walk it beside you by the handlebar, and fold it only where it will be parked. For car trips, lift with a second person or use a rack rated for its weight.
