Wheel size, seat height and bike weight decide whether a rider can control an electric dirt bike. Here is how the size classes line up, from a first ride to a full size trail bike.
The short answer
Electric dirt bike sizes fall into three groups: kids bikes with 8 to 12 inch wheels, mini and pit bikes with 16 inch wheels or smaller, and full size bikes with 17 inch wheels or larger. Pick by seat height first: seated, the rider should reach the ground with the balls of both feet. Then check the maker’s age range, rider height and weight limit, and choose a bike with speed modes or a factory limit so the power matches the rider’s skill.
Wheel size is the quickest way to sort electric dirt bikes, and our shop filters use it too.
Our electric dirt bike shop lets you filter by bike size and by rider: kids, teens and youth, or adults.
Start with the seat height on the product page and the rider’s inseam. Measure the inseam from the floor to the crotch in bare feet. The suspension sinks a little when the rider sits, so the seat ends up somewhat lower than the listed figure.
Kids bikes are small, light and slow on purpose, and most let a parent pick the speed.
For the youngest riders, the Hiboy BK1 electric balance bike suits ages 3 to 5. It weighs 17.6 lb and can be ridden with the power off, like a regular balance bike. See all of them in kids electric rides and our kids rides guide.

Mini and pit bikes are the step up from a kids bike, and the class with the widest spread in power. Seat heights are similar, but top speeds run from 15 mph to 50 mph, so read the speed figure as carefully as the size.

Full size bikes carry taller seats, more suspension travel and much more weight. Compare seat heights carefully, because they vary by several inches.
Some full size models offer a seat choice. The E Ride Pro PRO 4.0 comes with a long or a short seat. To compare two popular light models, read Talaria vs Surron.

Power that matches the rider matters as much as size. Look for one of these:
Supervise young riders, and gear up every time: a helmet that fits, goggles, gloves, boots and pads. Some states set minimum ages for off-road vehicles, so check your state rules too.
Buying a bike to grow into is the most common sizing mistake. A bike that is too tall or too heavy is hard to stop and balance, which knocks a new rider’s confidence and makes falls more likely. Buy for the rider today, and use speed modes to stretch the time they spend on it. When they outgrow it, move up a class.
Bigger bikes also carry bigger batteries. Our guide to electric dirt bike range explains what the battery numbers mean, and electric dirt bikes for beginners covers power and where to ride. Not sure which size fits? Send us the rider’s height, inseam and weight through our contact page.
Go by height and experience, not age alone. Young children usually start on a kids bike with 8 to 12 inch wheels, such as the Hiboy DK1 for ages 3 to 10. Taller or more experienced kids may fit a mini bike with a seat around 27 inches. Always follow the maker’s age range and weight limit.
Seated on the bike, a new rider should reach the ground with the balls of both feet. Compare the listed seat height with the rider’s inseam, and remember the suspension sinks a little when you sit.
Close enough for shopping. In our shop, both fall under mini and pit: bikes with 16 inch wheels or smaller, often a 14 inch front and 12 inch rear.
Yes, if the bike is rated for it. The NAVEE Storm G and NANROBOT KD2W14, for example, list a 265 lb maximum load. Check the maximum load against your weight in full gear.
