Financing an electric scooter: how Pay in 4 and monthly plans work

Splitting the cost can make sense, as long as you know which plans are interest free, which are not, and what you will have paid at the end.

The short answer

Yes. At checkout you can split the cost with Affirm, Klarna or Afterpay. Pay in 4 divides the price into four payments over six weeks at 0% APR. Monthly plans spread the cost over a longer term, and most of them charge interest, with the rate based on your credit. You see the exact payment, rate and total before you agree to anything.

  • Pay in 4 is the interest free option: four equal payments, one at checkout and three more every two weeks.
  • Monthly plans run longer and usually carry interest. The APR depends on your credit and the term.
  • Checking what you qualify for is a soft inquiry and does not affect your credit score.
  • Always compare the total you will pay, not just the monthly amount.

The two kinds of plan

Short and interest free, or longer with interest. Almost every financing offer at an online checkout is one of these two.

  • Pay in 4. The price is split into four equal payments. The first is due at checkout and the rest follow every two weeks, so you are done in six weeks. The APR is 0%. Providers set their own limits on order size, shown at checkout.
  • Monthly plans. The price is spread over a number of months. The rate depends on the provider, the term and your credit. Some shoppers are offered 0% on certain terms, and many are offered a rate with interest. The checkout shows your exact monthly payment, APR and total cost before you commit.

We offer plans through Affirm, Klarna and Afterpay. Which ones appear, and on what terms, is decided by the provider. Details are on our financing page.

How it works at checkout

  • Add the electric scooter to your cart and go to checkout.
  • Choose a financing provider as your payment method.
  • Enter a few details. The provider gives a decision in real time.
  • Review the plans offered: number of payments, amount, APR and total.
  • Pick one and confirm. Your order ships the same way as any other, and you repay the provider directly.

Read the summary screen. It states the APR, every payment date and the total of payments. If the total is higher than the price of the electric scooter, the difference is the interest you are agreeing to pay.

What about my credit?

Seeing your options is a soft inquiry, which does not affect your credit score. Providers check eligibility this way when you apply at checkout. If you accept a monthly plan, the provider may report the loan and your payments to credit bureaus, so paying on time matters and missed payments can hurt your score.

Approval is not automatic. Each provider makes its own decision based on your credit history, the order size and your record with them. If one declines, another may still approve you.

How to read the real cost

The monthly payment is the least useful number on the screen. A long term makes nearly anything look affordable. Look at three figures instead:

  • APR. The yearly cost of borrowing. 0% means you pay only the price.
  • Total of payments. What you will have paid by the end.
  • Term. A shorter term means higher payments and less interest. A longer term means the reverse.

A worked example with round numbers: a $1,200 purchase over 12 months at 0% APR is $100 a month and costs $1,200. The same purchase at 15% APR is about $108 a month and costs about $1,300 in total. At 30% APR it is about $117 a month and about $1,404 in total. Your own offer will differ, and the checkout shows it exactly.

When financing makes sense

  • The electric scooter replaces a cost you already have. If it takes the place of transit fares, parking, fuel or ride share trips, the savings can cover the payments.
  • You qualify for 0%. Spreading a payment at no cost is simply useful.
  • It lets you buy the right model once. Stretching to a model with enough range and the right weight rating beats buying twice. See how to choose an electric scooter.

It makes less sense if the rate you are offered is high and you could save up within a few months, or if the payments would strain your monthly budget. Late fees and interest on top of a tight budget are a poor trade.

Tips before you apply

  • Decide your budget before you look at monthly payments, not after.
  • Compare the offers from more than one provider at checkout.
  • Choose the shortest term you can comfortably afford.
  • Set up automatic payments so you never miss a date.
  • Check the returns policy so you know how a refund works on a financed order. The provider adjusts or cancels the plan once the return is processed.
