Electric balance bike guide: who it suits, how kids learn and safety

An electric balance bike lets a small child learn balance first and add a little power later. Here is who it suits, how to teach it in steps and how to keep it safe.

The short answer

An electric balance bike is a pedal-free bike with a small motor, for young children who are still learning to balance. The Hiboy BK1 is listed for ages 3 to 5 and riders up to 77 lb, weighs 17.6 lb and has two speed modes up to 9 mph. Kids can also ride it with the power off, like a regular balance bike. Teach it in steps: glide with the power off first, then the lowest speed mode on flat ground, with a helmet on and an adult close by.

  • Electric balance bikes suit young children: the Hiboy BK1 is listed for ages 3 to 5 and up to 77 lb.
  • Balance comes first. Let kids walk and glide with the power off before the motor goes on.
  • Keep to flat, open ground away from traffic. Hiboy rates the BK1 for slopes of up to 5 degrees.
  • A helmet that fits on every ride, closed shoes and an adult within reach.

What an electric balance bike is

A balance bike has no pedals. A child sits on it, pushes along with their feet and learns to glide and steer. An electric balance bike adds a small motor and battery, so once a child can balance, the bike can carry them along at a gentle speed.

The Hiboy BK1 is the electric balance bike we carry. It has a 5.5 inch, 100W brushless motor, 12 inch tires, two speed modes up to 9 mph, and an electronic brake with a rear roller brake. It weighs 17.6 lb, so a child can push it around, and kids can ride it with the power off like a regular balance bike.

That power-off option is what makes it a learning tool rather than just a small electric ride. Your child gets the balance practice first, and the motor is there for later.

Who an electric balance bike suits

Hiboy lists the BK1 for ages 3 to 5, with a maximum load of 77 lb. Within that range, readiness matters more than birthdays. Signs your child is ready:

  • They can sit on the seat with both feet flat on the ground.
  • They can walk the bike along and steer it where they want to go.
  • They follow simple instructions, such as stop, slow down and wait.
  • They will wear a helmet without a fight.

Signs to wait: a child who cannot reach the ground, cannot steer at walking pace yet, or gets upset when the bike moves faster than they expect. Give them more time gliding with the power off.

An older or heavier child, or one who already rides with confidence, may be ready for a kids electric dirt bike or scooter instead. Our kids rides guide covers the wider range of first electric rides.

The learning progression, step by step

Teach balance first, then speed. Each step should feel easy before you move to the next one.

  • Step 1: walk it. Power off. Your child sits, walks the bike along and steers around the yard or an empty path.
  • Step 2: glide. Still power off. They push off with both feet and lift them for a second or two, then longer. Once they can glide and steer with their feet up, the balance is there.
  • Step 3: stop on command. Before the motor goes on, make sure they stop every time you say stop, feet down and using the brake as you showed them.
  • Step 4: the lower speed mode. Power on, on flat, open ground. Walk or jog beside them for the first few sessions.
  • Step 5: the higher mode. Only once starts, stops and turns are smooth in the lower mode. Up to 9 mph is quick for a young child, so there is no rush.
  • Step 6: what comes next. A pedal bike, or a kids electric dirt bike with speed modes a parent sets.

Keep sessions short. Hiboy rates the BK1 for up to 5 miles, about 30 to 50 minutes of riding, which is plenty for one outing. Stop while your child is still enjoying it.

Where to ride

Flat, smooth and away from traffic. Hiboy rates the BK1 for slopes of up to 5 degrees, so it is built for level ground, not hills.

  • Good places: a fenced yard, an empty paved court, or a quiet park path where wheeled rides are allowed.
  • Places to avoid: streets, driveways, parking lots, busy sidewalks, steep slopes, and anywhere near pools or water.

The BK1 is rated IPX4, which covers splashes. Skip puddles, and dry it off after a damp ride.

Safety gear and supervision

  • A helmet on every ride, including power-off gliding. Look for a bicycle helmet that meets the CPSC standard, sitting level just above the eyebrows. We carry kids helmets such as the NAVEE Kids Helmet, which fits 48 to 55 cm heads, and the Segway NB-410 kids helmet in XS, which fits 19.69 to 21.65 in heads and sets the fit with a spin dial. Check the label for the standard before the first ride.
  • Knee and elbow pads, and wrist guards if your child will wear them.
  • Closed shoes. On a balance bike, kids push off and slow down with their feet, so sandals are out.
  • An adult within reach, walking or jogging alongside in the early sessions and always watching after that.

Show your child how the brake works at walking pace, and practice stops until they happen without thinking.

Charging is an adult job. Use the supplied charger, charge on a hard surface while someone is home, and unplug it when it is full. Hiboy lists a 3 to 5 hour charge. Our battery care guide covers storage between seasons.

What comes after an electric balance bike

When your child glides with confidence, handles the higher mode with control and nears the 77 lb limit or the top of the age range, plan the next ride.

  • A pedal bike. Balance is the hard part of learning to ride, and a balance bike rider already has it.
  • NAVEE Cyber X: a small electric dirt bike on 8 inch tires, with a 5 mph safe start mode and a 9.5 mph top speed.
  • Hiboy DK2: listed for ages 3 to 7, with 12 inch tires, rear suspension and three speed modes of 5, 8 and 13 mph.
  • Hiboy DK1: listed for ages 3 to 10, with front and rear suspension and modes of 5, 7.5 and 15.5 mph.

Questions riders ask

What age is an electric balance bike for?

Follow the maker’s range. Hiboy lists the BK1 for ages 3 to 5, with a maximum load of 77 lb. Readiness matters too: your child should reach the ground with both feet and steer at walking pace.

How fast does an electric balance bike go?

The Hiboy BK1 has two speed modes and tops out at 9 mph. Start in the lower mode on flat ground, and move up only when your child starts, stops and turns smoothly.

Can you ride an electric balance bike without the motor?

The Hiboy BK1, yes. Kids can ride it with the power off, like a regular balance bike, which is the best way to learn balance before using the motor.

How long does the battery last on one charge?

Hiboy rates the BK1 for up to 5 miles, about 30 to 50 minutes of riding, with a 3 to 5 hour charge.

Is an electric balance bike better than a regular one?

It depends on the child. A regular balance bike teaches balance well. An electric one does the same with the power off, then adds gentle powered riding once balance is in place.
