Backpack electric scooter guide: the smallest scooters you can really carry

Most portable scooters are carried by the stem. One folds into its own backpack. Here is how it compares with the lightest folding commuters, and what a scooter this small gives up.

Published Oct 8, 20267 min read

The short answer

A backpack electric scooter folds small enough to carry on your back, so your hands stay free on stairs and station platforms. In our catalog, the Teewing X6 Backpack is the true one: it weighs 22 lb and folds into its own backpack, with a 250W motor, a 15 mph top speed and up to 12 miles of range. If you need more range or a higher rider weight limit, the next step is a light folding commuter of 25.6 to 29.3 lb that you carry by hand or on a shoulder strap. Either way, a small scooter trades range, speed, wheel size and rider weight limit for portability.

  • The Teewing X6 Backpack weighs 22 lb and folds into its own backpack, so you carry it on your back.
  • The lightest folding commuters weigh 25.6 to 29.3 lb and go further and faster, but you carry them by hand or on a strap.
  • Small means less: the X6 lists 12 miles, 15 mph, 5.5-inch wheels and a 220 lb max load.
  • Transit agencies and offices set their own rules on folded scooters, so check before you plan around one.

What a backpack electric scooter is

A backpack electric scooter is one you carry on your back, not by the stem. That sounds like a small difference until you climb station stairs with a coffee in one hand and a 30 lb scooter hooked over the other arm.

Most portable scooters fold flat and are carried by the stem, a handle or a strap. Even a compact fold like the E-TWOW Booster ES, at 38.6 x 13.0 x 5.9 in, is longer than a backpack. The Teewing X6 Backpack works the other way round: it comes with its own backpack and folds to go inside it.

The Teewing X6 Backpack, spec by spec

The X6 is built for short hops, not long commutes. Here is what Teewing lists:

  • Weight: 22 lb.
  • Motor and battery: a 250W motor and a 36V 5Ah battery.
  • Speed and range: up to 15 mph and up to 12 miles.
  • Wheels: 5.5-inch solid wheels that cannot go flat, with front suspension.
  • Brakes: a foot brake plus an electronic brake.
  • Max load: 220 lb.
  • Water rating: IP54.
  • Charging: 3 to 4 hours.

That makes it a last mile scooter: the stretch from the train to the office, or across a campus, where you would otherwise walk. It sits under $500. See the rest of the range on the Teewing brand page.

Need more range? The lightest folding commuters

Add about 4 to 7 lb and you get a bigger battery, more speed and a higher rider limit. These do not go in a backpack, but they are still easy to lift. Our guide to the lightest electric scooters covers this group in more depth.

  • E-TWOW Booster ES: 25.6 lbs. A 36V 281Wh battery, 8-inch solid tires and front and rear shock absorbers, with a folding handlebar and grips.
  • NANROBOT H1: about 27.6 lb. 8.5-inch solid honeycomb tires, a rear disc brake, cruise control and a 265 lb max load.
  • NANROBOT X8: about 28.7 lb. The light pick with 10-inch air tires and a removable 36V 10.4Ah battery.
  • E-TWOW GT SL and GT Sport: 29.3 lbs. A 48V battery, airless tires, front and rear shock absorbers and a 3-point fold to 41.7 x 13.0 x 5.8 in.

Maker figures, checked September 2026. Real range and speed depend on rider weight, terrain, temperature and riding mode.

The NANROBOT models sit under $500, like the X6, and the E-TWOW models between $500 and $1,000.

What you give up for a scooter this small

Every inch and pound you save comes out of the battery, the wheels or the frame. Compare the X6 with the 29.3 lb E-TWOW GT Sport:

  • Range. The X6 runs on a 36V 5Ah battery and lists 12 miles. The GT Sport carries a 48V 504Wh battery and lists 25 miles. Real range is lower than either figure when you ride fast, climb hills or ride in the cold.
  • Speed. 15 mph for the X6 against 26 mph for the GT Sport. Many places limit electric scooters to 15 to 20 mph, so the gap matters less than it looks. Check your local rules.
  • Wheels. Small solid wheels never go flat, but they feel every crack and can catch on potholes and rail tracks. The X6 rolls on 5.5-inch wheels, the GT Sport on 8-inch airless tires and the NANROBOT X8 on 10-inch air tires. Slow down on rough pavement.
  • Rider weight. The X6 carries up to 220 lb, the E-TWOW models 242 lbs and the NANROBOT H1 and X8 265 lb. Your bag counts toward the total.
  • Brakes. Small scooters usually pair one mechanical brake with an electronic one. The X6 uses a foot brake and an electronic brake, and the NANROBOT H1 a rear disc. Leave more room to stop.

On the train and in the office

Check the rules before you plan a mixed commute. Each transit agency sets its own policy on folded scooters, and some restrict them at busy hours. Offices and buildings vary too, so ask before your first day.

  • Fold before the gate. Fold the scooter before you enter the station, and carry it rather than rolling it through crowds.
  • Keep your hands free on stairs. A backpack leaves both hands for rails and doors. For the E-TWOW GT Sport, GT and Booster ES, the E-TWOW shoulder strap adds a padded strap and a detachable carry handle, rated for up to 55 lbs.
  • A bag for heavier folders. The Segway carry bag holds a folded Segway E2 Plus II, E2 Pro, E3 Pro or F3, with long and short straps to carry, shoulder or pull it. Those models weigh 36.2 to 42.3 lbs, so it is a carry, not a backpack.
  • Charging at work. The X6 charges in 3 to 4 hours, so a top-up during the workday is easy. E-TWOW sells a charger bag that straps the GT Sport or Booster ES charger to the scooter. Ask before you plug in at work, and never leave a charging battery unattended.

Storing a small scooter at home

A small scooter fits a closet, a shelf or the space under a desk, which is half the reason to own one. Take it out of its bag before you charge it, and charge on a hard surface, away from your exit, while someone is home. Our guide to electric scooter storage in an apartment covers charging spots, fire safety and winter storage.

A scooter that goes everywhere with you is also harder to steal, because it rarely waits outside. For the times it does, our guide to electric scooter insurance explains what home and renters policies may or may not cover.

Which small scooter to choose

  • Last mile hops with a train or bus: the Teewing X6 Backpack.
  • A walk-up and a longer ride: the E-TWOW GT Sport, which lists up to 25 miles at 29.3 lbs.
  • Air tires at a light weight: the NANROBOT X8.
  • Riders up to 265 lb: the NANROBOT H1 or X8.
